Ship Hydrodynamics Research

When the seaforthmarine group’s engineers start new design, we start thinking not only the ship’s appearance and interior but also the submerged part of the ship which normally we can’t see. That is all connect to the ship hydrodynamics problem. Designing the best looking yachts gives us many open opinions, but the designing the good performance yachts leave just one answer. That is the designing the optimum hull form with the right propeller. To achieve that goal, we conduct many tests and calculations.

Having the efficient seagoing vessel is the final results of the combination with the many different experiments, such as towing tank test, seakeeping test and propeller cavitation test and many calculations with years of designing experience.

Creating a hull form becomes the starting point of the total yacht design process. It is the most important stage of the entire process of design and production. While the owner can change propellers or interior décor to suit; the hull form remains a constant. Therefore designing the hull form should be done using the most sophisticated and prudent way.

The naval architects at Seaforth Marine Groups (SMG) collectively have 50 years of hull form design experience from the commercial ship, like over 1000 ft VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier) to 10ft length Kayak . This includes new technology, such as and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) program based on FDM (Finite Difference Method) which is an in-house developed software code. With this they strive to achieve the goal of achieving a highly efficient and stable hull.

" Generated Wave by the CFD Code"

The above software screen shows similarity to the real generated wave.

Seaforth Marine Group’s naval architects use experimental and numerical methods to develop an efficient hull form which means more range to the ocean going passage makers.
SMG found the most efficient hull form for the entire series of Tradition yachts from 42 to 68 ft hull forms using this software. The process involved using in-house developed CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code to make the calculation of the wave and friction resistance. The end result was a Tradition Series which provides a comfortable ride to the owners and guests

Once a hull form is derived from the results of these computations, the next step is creating a physical model and taking it to the towing tank for a real world test to confirm the final hull form. Deriving the selected hull form by such a careful approach becomes the cornerstone of the well engineered and well built Seaforth Marine Group yachts.

By doing the seakeeping test, we can anticipate the ship’s pitching motion under the various sea state, so the results give the engineer how to design the hull form and weight distribution.

And at the propeller, cavitation causes vibration and noise and also erosion of the propeller itself. To prevent those problems, selection of the optimum pitch and propeller size comes first, but the experiment will prove the performance of the propeller. And also after part of the hull form effects the cavitation phenomena, so the propeller design is also done at a same time with a hull form design.

And not all this experiments results give use the one direction design situation. That is why more experienced designers bring the better results. Seaforthmarine’s engineers have plenty of the experiments and sea trial experience and also design. Therefore we know where is the optimum design point, so the yacht’s performance. That’s the reason why many customers are satisfied their yachts. Behind the elegant and luxurious outlook of the yacht, there are countless hidden efforts of the Seaforthmarine’s engineers to make the everything works well together.

Seaforth Marine Group: Interior Design Dept.

In the yachting industry, over half of a vessels money goes into the interior fit and finish. When someone walks onto your vessel, it is the interior that will “wow” them and the performance that will send them over the edge. You do not want to leave this up to just anyone. At Seaforth Marine Group, we can ensure your own personal style and comfort will be taken care of through our highly capable and accredited Interior Design department. Headed up by senior interior designer, Coralee Huffman BID, we allow our clients to explore their options and ultimate dreams through interior styling and general layouts, to joinery details, mechanical applications, lighting effects, fabrics, finishes and outfitting. A qualified and accredited interior designer can ensure your safety and comfort aboard wiether your scope of work is a minor refit, repair and /or renovation, or a completely new design for constuction. Only a qualified designer can predict and plan for the ergonomic challenges, functionality and design environments that only the yachting industry produces. We ARE a full service interior design studio and whether you already have a vessel, or looking at purchasing a new one, we at Seaforth Marine Group strive for perfection.

Electrical Design Capabilities of Seaforth Marine Group

The electrical system of a yacht is much more than simply a set of wires delivering power to a motor. It is the very nerve center and control matrix that makes everything possible onboard your luxury yacht. The electrical system provides for energy transfer, control of all on-board systems, plus personal security and globe spanning communications with the outside world. It provides the vital and necessary link between your wish and the resultant actions on board your ship.

In order to design the perfect electrical system for your seagoing vision, our design team start by working with you to develop a clearly defined statement of operational requirements. Then design drawings and specifications are prepared to suit your specific vessel and construction requirements and budget.

We utilize the latest technology, tempered by long standing industrial experience to create innovative marine applications in the custom yacht design market. Our design team is constantly monitoring global developments in the marine industry as well as several technology frontiers. This keeps us in touch with emergent technologies and new developments that can be used to advantage in the next yacht design.

Seaforth Marine Group can provide design details such as

  • Wiring and cabling sizing for all onboard electrical equipment.
  • Location and size of generators, transformers, inverters and battery banks
  • Placement of shore power inlets and associated equipment
  • Circuit breaker panels size and location
  • Wire chases to service all appliances, lights and outlets

We can work to any of the major standards bodies such as:

  • Lloyds,
  • ABS,
  • De Norske Veritas

As a minimum our designs are compliant with CE/ ABYC standards

Design details cover the following:

  • Separate wiring chases for major DC, AC and communication circuits.
  • Dedicated wiring for navigation and vessel system operations plus communications
  • Supplemental independent batteries and wiring for emergency use.
  • Cat5e ethernet data distribution wiring run in separate wire chases.
  • Distributed entertainment system wiring
  • CCTV security camera wiring, or wireless as applicable.

Our interior detail drawings define the location and placement of all utility outlets and electrical equipment as well as the location for all light switches and light fixtures.

Details are also provided for any additional wiring required for above deck equipment such as windlasses, side thrusters; even hot tubs and Jacuzzis.

For suitable applications we can even design fly by wire control systems and provide wiring for multiple auxiliary helm stations. Wireless technology can be incorporated in select applications where convenience and safety considerations make it a “best fit”.

Designs involving glass bridges with multiplexed control systems and the necessary system integration are on the drawing boards.

Our CAD design software suite includes programs like Rhino which can depict system vessel interiors and layouts in 3D

We are exploring innovative systems like Diesel – Electric propulsion for yachts under 30 meters. We monitor all such technical developments in the marine fields, both commercial and pleasure craft.

Our design team review these developments and examine which ones are suitable for adaptation to our market.

We also keep an eye on other emerging “green” technologies for inclusion in new designs
